Young scholars from all over the world are invited to this year’s Summer School “Politics of Near Futures: Possibilities, Prophecies, Prognoses.” It will take place at the Karl Jaspers Centre in Heidelberg from July 27 to 31, 2014. Applications are accepted until May 31.

The Summer School 2014 “Politics of Near Futures” will explore historical and contemporary ways of making sense of the future and bringing ideas of worlds-to-come into the spheres of politics, science and cultural production. As the world of the 21st Century is shaking at all ends, deliberations about humanity's possible near futures have regained heightened urgency and importance across the registers of politics, science and religion. The Summer School will study transcultural ideas of human and non-human near futures. That is, futures that are imagined by narrating contemporary potentialities into the future: As prophecy, estimate, prognosis, demographic planning, extrapolation or statistical calculation.

The event addresses graduate students in humanities and social sciences with an interest in transcultural ideas of the end of times and ideas of possible futures. It is designed as an academic programme, which combines insights in the research of renowned experts in the form of lectures with discussions with fellow participants. The invited scholars represent a wide range of backgrounds and share an interest in engaging in critical dialogue across regional and disciplinary boundaries. The keynote lecture will be presented by Akhil Gupta (UC Los Angeles). The confirmed speakers include Jennie Chapman (University of Hull), Michel Garenne (Institut Pasteur, Paris), Eben Kirksey (University of New South Wales) and from Heidelberg University Anthony Santoro, Kerstin von Lingen, Daniel Münster, Katja Rakow and Sophie Roche.

Applications should be accompanied by a letter of motivation and are to be sent by May 31. The official application form can be found on our website. The Summer School fee of 250 Euro covers the lectures and seminar programme, reception on the first evening, lunch, coffee and cold drinks during the course, as well as local sightseeing programme. Participants are expected to arrange travel and accommodation in Heidelberg for the duration of the school by themselves. However, the organisation team is happy to provide advice and a comprehensive list of accommodation possibilities and prices. The Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” offers up to three fee waivers for participants applying from non-OECD countries. These waivers cover the participation fee of 250 Euro. For more information, please see the summer school website.

The Summer School 2014 is coordinated by four Junior Research Group Leaders of the Cluster. Dr. Daniel Münster is group leader of research group C15 "Agrarian Alternatives". Dr. Kerstin von Lingen is responsible for research group A16 "Transcultural Studies". Dr. Katja Rakow leads research group B21 on "Transcultural Dynamics on Pentecostalism." Dr. Sophie Roche coordinates the research group C16 “Demographic Turn”.
