Abst.

This is a presentation from a work in progress on how cities represent and manifest power. It is a global study, starting from the rise of nation-states and their national capitals, going up until today. It lays out an analytical framework of the main variables of power shaping modern urban, and especially capital city, history in the world. While also dealing with urban form and urban functionality, the study, and this presentation in particular, pays particular attention to symbolic representations, through, e.g., the spacing and the architectural grammar of power of important buildings, and forms of monumentality and commemoration. The presentation will include some illustrative pictures.
