When I was a college student Istarted studying English to read more papers on linguistics. I have been presenting my work in English through out my graduate career to communicate with researchers at a global level, but there were places that my language skill took me where I didn't expect to go. Namely, during my Dive Master training course in Malaysia and the first freediving championship in Japan, I worked on risk management for the divers from all over the world. I didn't expect that I would be responsible for human life because of the English training that I started for academic purposes. If I couldn't speak English, I would have missed these opportunities for sure. However, I believe it is more important tobe an expert in linguistics, risk management in the ocean, etc. than just being able to speak English. Once you find what you want to pursue, the necessity of studying a broad and studying English and other languages will emerge by it self. I believe you will learn a lot from the stuff that you do for what you want to do.
I would like all of you enrolled in this program to find something that you want whole heartedly to explore. It is my hope that this will help you to identify the study and overseas experiences that you need to under take and will continue to accumulate through out out the course of your life.
