The Studying Japan and Asia in Kyoto Program is an inter-faculty initiative designed to enable structured study of the cultures, societies, economies, and environments of Japan and the Asian region, making use of our university's unique location here in the city of Kyoto.
The program brings together the diverse resources in Asian studies and Japanese studies developed by Kyoto University to date, and includes collaboration with universities and research institutes beyond Japan. It offers a wide range of classes beginning at the introductory level and taught by experts across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
Local and international students at Kyoto University use the program to undertake interdisciplinary study of Asia and Japan extending beyond their own fields of specialization.
International students enrich their knowledge of Japan, while local Japanese students learn global approaches to the study of their own country and the Asian region. In order to provide as many students as possible with on-ground experiences in Asia, the program offers a wide range of training and fieldwork opportunities in various Asian locations. Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of these in-country opportunities.
They are also expected to develop the capacity for independent interaction in Asian settings through the study of at least one language other than English. Choices include Liberal Arts and General Education Courses in Chinese, Korean, and Arabic, and specialized courses in Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai, and Hindi.
We anticipate that the program's structured curriculum will equip local and international students with a solid foundation in Japanese and Asian Studies, complemented by practical, interactive experience, preparing them for successful international careers with a solid Asian outlook.
Regular students of Kyoto University who fulfill the credit requirements for completion of the program and are approved by the KUASU Educational Program Committee will receive a completion certificate.
