My personal objective in this program was to make Vietnamese university students interested in coming to Japan. Now that the program is over, however, I havea different aim for the future: tomake Japanese people interestedin Vietnam.
We took classes in Vietnamese language and culture almostevery day of the program. I was impressed by the intricacies of the Vietnamese custom of altering forms of address depending on the individual, and the complexity of the six-tone intonation system. One activity that was especially memorable was thee xtracurricular introduction to Vietnamese cultural characteristics that we received on day two, in the form of a tour of the campus and surrounds.
The exchange session with local Vietnamese students involved giving pre-prepared presentations on variousaspects of Japanese culture. Our presentation dealt with Japanese aesthetic sense. The five group members each introduced a different topic: martial arts, tea ceremony, dry gardens, onomatopoeia, and bento lunch boxes. This was followed by discussion with local students.
Out of all my experiences in the program, the thing that left the strongest impression on me was the enthusiasm of the Vietnamese students learning Japanese. I got afirst-hand taste of the Vietnamese spirit of friendship toward Japan. My time in Vietnam made merealize that in order to build aneven closer relationship between the two countries, Japanese people need to take a greaterinterest in Vietnam, extend their knowledge of it, and learn from it. I myself will maintain my interestin this country. I hope to continue learning about it proactively, and to share my insights with other Japanese people. I would liketo make use of my Vietnamese experiences in my future career, which I hope will involve working in an international environment.
As an aside, I should mention that some of the Vietnamese students I got to know on the program later came to Japan. Some of them even came to visit me here in Kyoto. I feel that I have achieved the objectives I set for myself onthis program.
