【The Future of Labour Migration to Japan: Panel Discussion on New Migration Policies and Recruitment Fees】

Date: 5 June 2024
Time: Morning Session 10:00-12:00, Afternoon Session 13:00-18:00 (Japan Time)
Place: Online and Faculty of Letters, Kyoto University, Main Conference Room (B1)

Language: English, with consecutive interpretation

Abstract:
This open event will bring together key stakeholders from Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Japan, to discuss current policies and issues concerning labour migration to Japan. The morning session will unpick the details of ongoing policy changes in Japan and the impact that the ongoing crisis in Myanmar is having on outbound migration. In the afternoon session, a panel discussion will debate issues concerning recruitment fees and efforts in both countries of origin and Japan to reduce fees, and move towards a zero-recruitment fee model.
The event will be held in English with consecutive Japanese interpretation. Anyone with an interest in labour migration issues or wish to learn more about recent developments are welcome to join. The event will be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend in person. The event is made possible thank to the support of the Toyota Foundation.

*The Mekong Migration Network (MMN), founded in 2003, is a sub-regional network of migrant support NGOs, migrant grassroots groups, and research institutes. The central goal of MMN is to promote the welfare, well-being, dignity, and human rights of migrants in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), including Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, and to build mutual support and solidarity among migrants and advocates within the sub-region.  For more information, please visit the MMN webpage.
